Power Wheelchair Donated To Terminally-Ill Kokomo Fisherman

Kokomo, IN (PRWEB) May 24, 2007 -- Two months ago, David Plummer made a promise. After receiving the devastating news that he had advanced lung cancer and only a few months to live, Mr. Plummer promised friends and family that he would find a way to continue his favorite pastime -- fishing -- despite his immobility and deteriorating health. With help from The SCOOTER Store, Mr. Plummer is returning to his favorite fishing pond in a power wheelchair.

Today, Kevin Cheatham, an Account Manager from The SCOOTER Store's Indianapolis Distribution Center, presented the power wheelchair to Mr. Plummer, who recently learned his cancer has spread to his brain and liver.

Mr. Plummer, 61, saw a television advertisement for The SCOOTER Store and asked his wife to find out if he could somehow obtain a power wheelchair. Fearing more bad news because the couple did not have medical insurance and could not afford to pay for a chair, Mrs. Plummer made the call anyway. She was thrilled to learn her husband could receive a wheelchair through The SCOOTER Store's "Gift of Mobility" program.

This was good news to the couple, who now live with Mr. Plummer's daughter, Beth. She has taken a second job to help pay the family's overwhelming bills, while Mrs. Plummer must stay home full-time to care for her husband. Even though the financial strain is tremendous, it has been even harder for the family to have Mr. Plummer lose his independence in his final days.

"My dad is an avid fisherman, and nothing would mean more to him or us than to see him keep his promise by independently wheeling himself out to the pond and go fishing," says Beth, who adds that the family "strongly believes that, at this stage of his illness, being able to get around on his own will allow him to keep the all-important positive attitude that he needs to keep up his fight against cancer."

Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, could not agree more as he acknowledged that "giving back freedom and independence is at the root of the mission of the Gift of Mobility Program." He continued, "We started this program to help improve the quality of life for people without the resources or insurance coverage to obtain mobility equipment. We are gratified that our efforts are making a difference, and will continue to do so."

Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002. Since its inception, the outreach program has worked with organizations around the world to donate every year as many as 70 power wheelchairs and scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 to community service organizations, enabling them to provide freedom, independence and personal integrity to individuals with limited mobility.
