Power Wheelchair Gift from the Scooter Store Brings Mobility to Terminally Ill Alabama Man
Robertsdale, AL (PRWEB) February 14, 2008 ?- The hardest part of battling terminal illness for William Wilson, 80, has been the loss of mobility and independence. Thanks to The SCOOTER Store, he now has a power wheelchair to keep him on the go.
The SCOOTER Store donated a power wheelchair to Mr. Wilson as part of its Gift of Mobility? program, which provides mobility equipment and assistance to those who do not have the means to purchase power wheelchairs and scooters. Representatives from The SCOOTER Store worked with the Dream Foundation to make the gift. Todays delivery was made by Paul Smith, mobility manager, of The SCOOTER Stores Mobile, Alabama distribution center.
Times have been tough for Mr. Wilson who suffers from congestive heart failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Because of his condition, he cannot go outside anymore and his mobility within the home is very limited. He is also trying to help his wife, Bernice, as she undergoes chemotherapy treatments for cancer.
The couple has neither insurance coverage nor the ability to buy a power wheelchair, so Mr. Wilson was resigned to being immobile. All that changed when he contacted the Dream Foundation and The SCOOTER Store and learned he could receive a power chair for free. The chair is giving him a new lease on life, allowing him to be able to go outside once again and enjoy freedom and independence.
Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store, says, We know how much mobility and independence mean to Mr. Wilson, and we are heartened to know this gift will allow him to improve his quality of life.?
Mr. Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like Mr. Wilson improve their quality of life by recovering their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with community service organizations to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year to people without the resources to pay for mobility equipment. The power wheelchairs and scooters provide people living with disabilities with more freedom and independence.
The Dream Foundation, (www.dreamfoundation.org) is the first and largest organization that grants final wishes to adults who have been physically, emotionally, and financially devastated by terminal illness. Now in its 13th year, the Dream Foundations mission is to enhance the quality of life for individuals and families battling terminal illnesses. Their goal is to ensure that no terminally ill adult whose life ends prematurely passes from this earth without realizing one final wish from the heart.
